BearFabrique - An Internet Time Machine of Weirdness

By admin | January 9, 2008

I have a special fondness for websites that haven’t really changed since 1997. Their uninspired text choices, the large hit counters, the occasional use of little animated .gif construction signs and men…it’s enough to make me feel just a little nostalgic. Bear Fabrique isn’t a 100% perfect example of the “1997 site”, but it’s enough to make me like it, crazy rants and all.

The guy who runs BearFabrique is more than a little opinionated. His “Yuppies & Guns” article postulates a method that would guarantee that “70% of all urban crime will vanish within two years.” Of course, the most amusing section was actually the Macho Fairy Tales portion of the site. Here’s an excerpt from “Henrietta Johnson and the 3 Bears”:

in the morning when he woke up, next to him in bed where he
might have thought Henrietta to have been, was a large grey
female timber wolf with Henrietta’s red ribbon around her neck
and wearing Henrietta’s negligee.

Green M&Ms as a Valentine’s Day Aphrodisiac

By admin | January 5, 2008

The secret to getting in my pants this year doesn’t involve a box of overpriced chocolates with questionable fillings. Nor does it involve cut flowers that will wither and die in less than a week. This year, my most-wanted V-Day gift is one of those new bags of green Valentine’s Day M&Ms. The bag even has a little green M&M man and the message that “green is the new color of love.” Indeed.

Anyway, it’s not the first time that green M&Ms have been suspected of having aphrodisiac powers. The practically ancient Virtual Pizza Server has been offering pretend green M&Ms as a pretend topping for over a decade.

Ahh, memories. I remember the 15-year-old me thinking she was being pretty naughty as she made one of those pizzas for a certain internet boyfriend. Of course, then he started sending me Beanie Babies and asking for bizarre samples…so that was the end of that. I guess that means they worked, though, in a strange sort of way.

And yes, I’m 100% serious about every part of the last 3 sentences. Parents, watch your kids on the Internet.

As you might expect, Snopes.com has a more thorough report on the Green M&Ms Aphrodisiac Controversy, but they really don’t answer the question of how it got started. They just say that students in the 1970s often picked out the green M&Ms to feed to their love interests. They suggest that it might have to do with the fact that the color green has been traditionally associated with healing and fertility. Yawn.

Does anyone have a better suggestion? Or do you think it’s because green M&Ms really do have aphrodisiac powers?

Peter Pan has Found his Tinkerbell, Plus: Getting Close to Peter

By admin | January 2, 2008

Randy Constan, more commonly known as Peter Pan of Pixyland.org has always warmed my cold, hardened heart. Why? Well, for starters, he’s a happy guy. He’s doing what he loves in spite of the fact that it makes him kind of a freak to most “normal” people. I also love that he isn’t like most people who decide that their lives are pretty much over when they (a) get a real job or (b) get a mortgage. Not him. He’s out there having the time of his life, making the most of every precious minute. Good for him!

When I saw on his website that he had met his soulmate, it brought a smile to my face. I don’t know what kind of freaky stuff is going on in THAT bedroom, but darn it, I’m happy for them. I wish them the best of luck!

I Hope this Guy Wasn’t on the Edge

By admin | December 30, 2007

I’m usually pretty excited to see Amazon’s recommendations. They take what they know about me and they send carefully computer-generated suggestions for future purchases. It’s like we’re having our own little intimate conversation, just me and Amazon.

Of course, I might not feel that way if I had gotten this recommendation:

Amazon wants you to commit suicide

It’s a good thing this guy has a sense of humor. If not, we could be looking at another entry in the “crazy lawsuit” books. Grieving mother sues Amazon after her daughter listens to its recommendation to kill herself…

Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians

By admin | December 27, 2007

When I first saw this site, my thoughts were along the lines of “What?? Who would make that? Why would they do it?”…but then I realized that it’s pure genius. As I scrolled through the pages, I saw that the author is definitely on to something.

It leaves only one question: Is it better to be a man who looks like an old lesbian, or an old lesbian who looks like a man?

Best Resume Ever

By admin | December 14, 2007

As someone who has read more than her fair share of real, insane resumes, I couldn’t help but laugh at this guy’s. A few highlights:

1955-1970. Lawyer, Dallas, Texas
Reason for Leaving: Unlawful Interference by the FBI

and…

The FBI had a couple beat me up in a supermarket because I wanted to buy food to eat.

The guy who runs the site is correct when he says that it gets a little repetitive after the first page or two. Of course, it might be more readable if it didn’t start to slip into handwritten text after the first page or so.

What would you do if you got this resume? I know what I would do. I would invite him (or her) in for an interview!

Funpredictable

By admin | December 4, 2007

Yes, I went there. I chose the corniest name possible for this blog. I’ll apologize for that right now.

Aside from that, I just want to make it clear that Funpredictable is intended to be a blog of cool, unusual, and weird things - minus the borderline porn that usually accompanies such sites. That’s not to say that I’m opposed to porn, but I don’t want the first thing my readers see to be giant plastic boobs all over the place. Crazy? Probably.

If you have recommendations for sites, please feel free to let me know via comment or e-mail. Enjoy!
